The Army and Navy Mandolin is so called because it was originally designed to be sold to American troops. Its simple design and surprisingly loud tone make it a great instrument to travel with.
With a Mahogany top, back and sides and and an oval hole design, it has a warm sweet tone, with more bass than F hole counterparts - though the smaller body keeps it sounding nice and bright!
