Moon Mandolin family

The mandolin family now occupies a prominent position in the performance of Traditional, Roots and World music, and particular the traditional music of Britain.
This is a fairly recent development and from the instruments developed by Lloyd Loar and the Gibson Company in the 1920’s and 30’s, a range of instruments and various hybrids have found a use in the performance of traditional, country, rock and acoustic music.
The Moon range of mandolin family instruments comprises of a selection of quality handmade instruments well suited to the performance of many types of acoustic music.


Moon Standard Mandolin

Hand built in Scotland by Jimmy Moon this is an excellent flat back mandolin in the mid-price band of quality hand-built instruments. The spruce and maple combination gives this mandolin good tone and volume and will hold its own in any situation.

The back and sides are built from solid natural maple with, the back of the body measures 65mm (2.559”) x 330mm (12.992” Black binding protects the front and back joints. The depth of the body is 46 mm (1.811”). The carefully selected soundboard (top) is built from solid spruce and has black/white sound-hole decoration rings.

The round sound-hole is 54mm diameter (2.125”). An adjustable height rosewood bridge with a compensated saddle is fitted to the soundboard for maximum transmission of sound. The nickel-plated ‘A’ style plate-type tailpiece has a slide off cover and is designed to accept loop end strings. A nickel strap button is fixed in the centre of the tailpiece.

The Neck Assembly… The mahogany neck is fitted with a rosewood fingerboard and has twenty nickel silver frets precisely positioned, honed and polished. Pearl dot markers are inlaid at the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 12th, 15th & 17th frets …the precisely cut nut is made from natural bone. The ‘snake-head’ shape headstock is faced with ebony and inlaid with a mother of pearl star and ‘Moon’ script insignia.

A set of Schaller high precision geared plate tuners are fitted for positive, trouble free tuning. Comes fitted with a standard set of light gauge 10, 14, 24w, 36w strings.
