Guild
Formed in Manhatten in 1952, and quickly moved to Hoboken, New Jersey, Guild quickly became established as a maker of great archtop eletric guitars and then folk guitars, with their 12-string guitars particularly gaining a solid reputation. In 1966, Guild moved to Westerley, Rhode Island, whose reputation remained high. Tim Buckley and Richie Havens (famously at Woodstock) and Eric Clapton used Guild 12-strings, Muddy Waters and Zal Yanovsky (Lovin Spoonful) used the electric Thunderbird, Nick Drake is holding a Guild M20 on the cover of 'Bryter Layter'. A Guild Starfire has pride of place on the Kinks album 'Kinks Kontroversy', and was played by Jerry Garcia in the Grateful Dead. The SG-like S100 was used by Soundgarden's Kim Thayil. Now owned by Fender, Guild make only acoustic guitars, some USA-made, plus the GAD series made in China.
