Yairi workshop is situated in Kani, in the mountainside area of Honshu, Japan and has a fine history of guitar making going back to 1935. Mr Kazuo Yairi, now 74 years old, took over the company from his father in 1963 after spending three years in the USA learning how the Americans were constructing and voicing their guitars. Mr. Yairi learned the 'tricks of the trade' in making violins and guitars from his father, who had gained international recognition for making fine instruments. From an early age Mr. Yairi earned himself a reputation as a talented luthier, following in his fathers footsteps. The master craftsmens skills of Mr Yairi, the calm atmosphere of the surroundings, and his attention to making the best guitars possible, are all reflected in each and every individual instrument K. Yairi make. Today, Kazuo Yairi and his team, set very high standards for the timber they use. All woods are naturally seasoned with no timber being kiln dried. Mr. Yairi has painstakingly been planning ahead to establish relevant inventory of relevant tonewoods and presently the K.Yairi factory holds one of the largest stocks of guitar tonewood in the World. Mr. Yairi purchases most woods in full logs, having been smart enough to install his own in-house sawmill and other than the sawmill, no machinery is used in the manufacture of the guitars, no CNC machines and no UV spray booths to speed up the process. Many K. Yairi guitars are made by a single craftsman; others are made by a team of three or four makers. When luthiers retire at sixty years of age from K. Yairi, they are welcomed back on a part time basis to help train the younger builders. There is a plaque in the workshop that reads "There is no other way of surviving except through high quality". This Japanese culture of pride is reflected in the guitars themselves. Each and every one reflect the pride, skill, craftmanship, and devotion to the task, beheld by the people making them, the K.Yairi team. Yairi Guitars have been endorsed and seen in the hands of many of the World's leading guitarists and bands including Sir Paul McCartney, U2, Radiohead, Carlos Santana, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Zakk Wylde, Monte Montgomery, Steve Hackett, Jerry Garcia & Bob Wier from The Grateful Dead, Ritchie Blackmore, Ani DiFranco amongst others. "K.Yairi" guitars unites the best of proven traditional construction methods, and an open minded attitude to new ideas and modern concepts. The balanced positive spirit, and attentive focus on quality, all executed by the mastermind of Kazuo Yairi, is reflected in these genuine instruments, that despite their unrivalled quality, are still within the reach of most serious guitarists today. Kazuo Yairi's skill, knowledge, patience, will and courage hade a better choice for us all. Mr Kazuo Yairi now oversees around thirty, carefully chosen, master craftsmen, many of whom have worked for him for years. They make some where in the region of four thousand guitars a year. In the past, most of those guitars have been sold in Japan and the USA (under the Alvarez-Yairi brand) and sadly this modest output meant that the UK was starved of these beautifully made guitars, but now through Promenade Music, you have the opportunity to try and buy these wonderful Japanese hand made instruments here in our Morecambe showroom. There is no doubt that Kazuo Yairi and his employees represent the best guitar construction in todays Japan and we welcome you to try them.
