Back in the late 70's and early 80's, the Fender Jazzmaster was deeply unfashionable! Apart from Elvis Costello and Television's Tom Verlaine, no-one was seen using them. As a result, they could be found cheap in second-hand stores. Which is partly why Sonic Youth used them. Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore started experimenting with the Jazzmaster and customised their guitars heavily, testing the parameters of the guitar as instrument itself, often using controlled (kind of) feedback in a dynamic way. They could be seen using all kinds of objects (like screw drivers) to do things to their guitars most guitarists would shrink from!
But they have also come up with countless killer riffs over the years, with the distinct Jazzmaster sound at the heart of it all.
One of the most influential guitar bands of the last 20 years, Sonic Youth have influenced almost every indie rock band since. They influenced Nirvana (they chose to sign with Geffen because SY had) and now it's pretty much de rigeur to have a Jazzmaster in your band.
So it's only right that Sonic Youth should get their own signature models! This is the latest from Fender:
