Blüthner Piano History: 1853 to Today
In the middle of the 19th century, the city of Leipzig in Germany was one of the cultural centres at the heart of Europe, equal to Paris, London or Vienna; and the Blüthner family became part – and still are – a major part of the musical tradition of the city. Julius Blüthner opened his piano factory on the 18th of November 1853 and his instruments soon achieved acclaim, rose to prominence, and captured the attention of top pianists and musical authorities. Blüthner won top prizes at world exhibitions around the globe and in 1876, his 4th string Aliquot design – which would influence the ‘Golden Tone’ of Blüthner pianos for evermore – won gold medal at the Philadelphia World’s Fair. Amazingly, the Blüthner piano company is still based in Leipzig and still owned and run by the Blüthner family.

World-class Design and Construction
Blüthner Aliquot Patent – This Blüthner grand piano has the Aliquot Patent system where the highest treble section of the grand has a fourth string which is raised from the other three and not struck by the hammer. The aliquot fourth string resonates in unison with the note that is played, thereby amplifying it and creating a rich, warm and colourful sound. The system was developed by Julius Blüthner over a century and a half ago and is considered a key facet of the Blüthner Golden Tone.

Blüthner Soundboard – Blüthner only use the very finest ‘white high alpine mountain spruce’ from hand-selected stock. They look for spruce that has a straight-running grain and at least seven annual rings per centimetre for their soundboards. The shape of a Blüthner soundboard is unique [a cylindrical curve with a tension evenly matched to the strings] and before construction and installation, the wood is seasoned for many years to ensure maximum resonance and durability, pre-tensioned and crowned in a process developed by Blüthner. The ribs are shaped to fit the curvature required and therefore, even under difficult climatic conditions, the tension of the soundboard remains intact for many decades to come.

Blüthner Iron Frame – The Blüthner iron frame is cast in a quartz sand mould using traditional methods and they are precisely calculated and manufactured to withstand the enormous amounts of tension required (nearly twenty tons) so each frame is seasoned outside for circa two years before being sprayed to a high quality-finish and individually fitted to a grand.

Blüthner Hammers – Blüthner hammerheads consist of a core that is made of Walnut which is covered with a dense hard-woven felt. The felts are processed in a complex cold-pressing process that optimally protects and preserves their valuable properties and the bright blue underfelt is recognisable in all Blüthner instruments.

Blüthner Action and Keyboard – With over 5,500 moving parts within the action and damper structure alone, utmost precision is required to enable a responsive touch for pianiists to play from Pianissimo to Fortissimo whilst retaining full control. To achieve excellent stability, the key-bed is manufactured of alternate layers of red beech and German pine; and the white keys are made from fine Bavarian Mountain Spruce with white acrylic key-tops and the black keys are made from high-density Ebony. The key heights and depth of touch are meticulously weighted and adjusted for ultimate control.

Blüthner Inner Rim & Cross Beams – The inner rim and cross beams (along with the iron frame) of a grand piano have to withstand enormous amounts of tension. The Blüthner cross beams are manufactured with a strong solid centre of red beech wood and finished with pine laminate to each side. This means they are strong and solid – and are designed with humidity effects in mind – and it ensures a permanent and solid fit for the bolts of the iron frame. The necessary rigidity of the rim is achieved by a fan-like arrangement of the beams and the inner rim and beams on all Blüthner grand pianos are joined using the traditional dove-tail joint, which guarantees excellent durability.

Blüthner Bridges – Blüthner bridges are adapted to the tension and curvature of the soundboard – in its optimal position – which ensures that the full spectrum of the strings vibration is transferred to the soundboard and both the bass bridge and treble bridge are constructed from fine quality European Maple.

Blüthner Pin Block – Blüthner pin blocks (aka wrest plank) is made of fourteen highly compressed hardwood layers which are cross-banded and glued at ninety degrees to the direction of the wood grain which secures the tuning pins on all sides for long-lasting tuning stability. Blüthner uses the additional support of a hardwood bushing where the tuning pin passes through the iron frame to assist in reducing the bending load of the pin.

Blüthner Artists and Friends One of the greatest privileges known to any pianomaker is the opportunity to collaborate with the artists of their day and to hear their instrument under the hands of a master. Through the unique, captivating sound of the Golden Tone, Blüthner has been honored to receive the adoration of some of the world’s finest composers and musicians throughout the generations. Today [2024], Blüthner’s ‘Artists and Friends’ include the international pianists: Joey Calderazzo, Petronel Malan, Alexander Paley, Clemens Unterreiner, Ovidio De Ferrari, Mikhail Pletnev, Gerard Aimontche, Susann Kobus, Jonathan Aner, Florian Krumpöck, Ars Synerga Duo, Niels Lan Doky, Aissa Bah, Louis Lancien, Elena Bezprozvannykh, Chenyin Li, Sibylle Briner, Marta Lledo, Markus Burger, Marsha Malènko, Pedro Casals, Andreas Mühlen, Phillipe Cavagnat, Jean Muller, Rima Chacaturian, Julia Mustonen, Billy Childs, Duc-Anh Nguyen, Thomas Chiron, Niu Niu, Emmanuel Christien, Alexander Paley, Lance Coburn, Artur Pizarro, Nikolai Demidenko, Romain Descharmes, Hannes Pohlit, Anastasiia Dombrovska, Tom Poster, Tom Donald, Irina Puryshinskaja, Marek Drewnowski, Eliane Reyes, Duo Tal & Groethuysen, Evgenia Rubinova,Leonid Egorov, Madalina Rusu, Pierce Kagari Emata, Timur Sergeyenia, Ying Feng, Juliana Steinbach, Hans Joerg Fink, Martin Sturfält, Mei Yi Foo, Alexander Sung, Tanya Gabrielian, Hiroaki Takenouchi, Hentrietta Gärtner, Amir Tebenikhin, Marie Catherine Girod, Anastasya Terenkova, Panayiotis Gogos, and Mitra Alice Tham to name but a few.
