Fender 60th Anniversary Jazzmaster, Black

The sound of surf music...and MUCH more.

MIM - MADE IN MEXICO

1958 - Leo Fender had already made the Telecaster and the Stratocaster and wanted to make something more upmarket and that might appeal to the top jazz professionals of the day. Well, things didn't go exactly according to plan!

Although some high profile jazz players like Joe Pass (Sounds of Synanan) played them briefly, and a few top pickers like Roy Clark (the Lightning Fingers Of) and Neil Levang (Lawrence Welk Orchestra) played them on TV shows, the market Leo aimed at initially didn't in fact get behind the guitar.

However, a new genre came to the rescue! In the late 50's, Dick Dale invented what became known as Surf Music, and intrumental music that took in teen themes of Surfing and Hot Rods became the music of the day between the first wave of Rock 'n' Roll until the Beatles came along with a wave of their own.

Bands like the Ventures, the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, the Champs and hundreds of others started using Fender guitars - particularly Jazzmaster (and Jaguars), Fender amps and Fender Reverb units.

After the Surf goldrush waned. the Jazzmaster's popularity dwindled until it was picked up by by Tom Verlaine of Television. Marquee Moon was huge hit in the UK and spawned legions of fans. Over in NYC, the likes of J.Mascis (Dinosaur Jnr) , Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo of Sonic Youth picked up cheap Jazzmasters and Jaguars. By the time Wilco's Nels Cline was rocking a Jazzmaster, the instrument had finally got the credit it deserved.

Despite having been discontinued for a while - at one point, only Fender Japan were making them - the Jazzmaster is well and truly BACK!

Maybe Leo was ahead of his time with this one? Either way, 60 years on, Fender is celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Jazzmaster - a true design classic!
