Ovation Guitars at Promenade Music

We’ve been an Ovation dealer for many years now and have recently had a re-stock of our range, including a couple of left-handed models and a 12-string.

So what makes Ovation guitars different to other brands? Well, there are a few subtle differences in style and design, but the main thing is the body of the guitar.

The man behind Ovation guitars was Charles Kaman who’s background was in the aerospace industry. This greatly influenced the research into the perfect body shape and materials used. Instead of the traditional flat-back wood, it has a “semi-parabolic” shape (often just called ’roundback’ and apparently the perfect shape for projection) and was christened the “Lyrachord” body. Instead of wood, it has man-made material called “special fiber-plastic composite material” that was able to be more consistent than wood and tunable at a molecular level! Ovation also pioneered the use of a built-in piezoelectric pickup at a time when guitars had to be mic’d up separately.

Ovation also have a reputation for their guitars not feeding back as much as traditional guitars, and they were quickly adopted by guitarists playing live.

Since it’s roots in Hartford, Connecticut, USA, Ovation has gone through many changes over the years, including some models being made in Asia and the Adams range being made in the USA. Ovation have recently announced the new American Pro Series which is a USA-made Ovation-branded series. We should have more news on this soon.
