Hammond

The Hammond Organ is an electric organ invented by Laurens Hammond in 1934, originally sold to churches as a lower-cost alternative to the wind-driven pipe organ. However, in the 1960s and 1970s, it became a standard keyboard instrument for jazz, blues, rock, church and gospel music. Featuring drawbars, percussive effects, key clicks and traditionally hooked up to a rotating Leslie speaker, the Hammond has featured heavily in popular music for the last 50 years. From the classic B3 sound of Stevie Winwood’s “Gimme Some Lovin’”, the classical-inspired “Whiter Shade of Pale” of Procol Harem,  the cool jazz grooves of Jimmy Smith, to the overdriven heavy rock sound of John Lord in Deep Purple, the Hammond organ has one of the most recogniseable sounds in music. Hammond have continued to be at the forefront of new technologies, and now manufacture a range that keeps all the best attributes of Hammond classics in a more practical and portable package.
