The Dulcimer is member of the zither family of instruments and the Appalachian dulcimer (or mountain dulcimer) refers to the region of the North Eastern part of USA where it was first made popular. The Appalachias span an area including the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Rocky Mountains.
Played on the lap (or a table) it’s sometimes referred to as a parlour instrument. Generally played to accompany singers or as a rhythm instrument.
Some musicians have used the dulcimer as their primary instrument, such as Jean Richie, whereas others have used it more ccasionally such as Joni Mitchell (check out “California” from her album “Blue”).
